A Room For Introspection (2021)

The Good News: Women in Architecture was held at the MAXXI Museum in Rome. The exhibition took visitors on a journey that started in the 1800s and ended with some of today’s leading women architects. For the exhibition, Mariam Issoufou was commissioned to create a site-specific installation called A Room For Introspection. It this black room (the colour of power, wisdom and knowledge in Islam), she peels back the layers of influences that have shaped her growing architecture practice. The room provides an intimate view into her world. It is a quiet meditation, a celebration of the mastery and skills and indigenous knowledge that too often goes overlooked. The room offers a place where this knowledge and mastery can be explored, confronted and appreciated.
